Why an Unfinished Puzzle Calls You Back
The psychology of interrupted tasks—and why a half-solved puzzle can remain quietly present in the mind.
What remains after we put a puzzle down: not always a better memory, but often a small desire to return.
A jigsaw puzzle can wait with remarkable patience.
Leave it on a table overnight and nothing changes. The blue pieces remain blue. The missing section of sky does not become easier in the dark. No clock counts down. No message asks where you have been.
And yet, passing the table the next morning, you may stop.
Only for a moment, you tell yourself. You pick up a piece. Its colour is unpromising, but one edge has the particular angle you remember. You try it in the gap.
It fits.
The puzzle did nothing to summon you. The invitation came from somewhere in the unfinished business between you and it.
Psychology has a famous name for part of this feeling: the Zeigarnik effect. It is often described as the mind’s tendency to remember incomplete tasks better than completed ones. The phrase appears in advice about studying, productivity, storytelling, advertising and game design.
It is an appealing idea. It is also less settled than its popularity suggests.
The more durable story may not be that unfinished puzzles stay perfectly preserved in memory. It may be something simpler and more recognisable: once we have begun, we often want to begin again.
A table in Berlin
The story starts in Berlin in the 1920s.
Bluma Zeigarnik was studying at the Psychological Institute of the University of Berlin, where a group of researchers influenced by Gestalt psychology were interested in how people organise experience into meaningful wholes. According to the familiar account, her teacher Kurt Lewin noticed that a waiter could remember open orders but seemed to lose the details once the bills had been paid.
An unpaid order still required something. A settled bill did not.
Zeigarnik turned that observation into a series of experiments. Participants were given a succession of small activities: modelling clay, drawing, arithmetic, assembling objects and other brief tasks. Some were allowed to finish. Others were interrupted before completion. Afterwards, they were asked what they remembered doing.
In her original results, interrupted tasks were recalled much more readily than completed ones. Zeigarnik proposed that beginning an activity created a kind of psychological tension. Completion released it; interruption left it active.
The finding had the satisfying shape of a good theory. It gave a name to an ordinary experience: the half-written letter that enters your thoughts at dinner, the unsolved clue that returns during a walk, the last few jigsaw pieces you can almost see when you close your eyes.
The effect became famous.
But fame is not the same as certainty.
The result that would not always return
Later researchers did not consistently reproduce Zeigarnik’s memory result. Sometimes unfinished tasks were remembered better. Sometimes completed tasks were. Sometimes there was little meaningful difference.
A 2025 meta-analysis by Romain Ghibellini and Beat Meier gathered the accumulated evidence on both the Zeigarnik effect and a closely related idea. Across the research they examined, there was no general memory advantage for unfinished tasks.
That does not make the original work foolish or the everyday experience imaginary. Psychological effects often depend on circumstances: how involved someone feels, whether the interruption is frustrating, whether completion matters, what happens during the delay and what the person believes the experiment expects from them.
It does mean that “the brain always remembers unfinished tasks better” is too neat.
For puzzle lovers, this correction is rather fitting. The famous answer turns out not to be the whole answer.
Remembering is not returning
Another researcher in Lewin’s circle, Maria Ovsiankina, asked a slightly different question.
Instead of testing what people remembered about interrupted activities, she watched what they did when they were later given a free opportunity to continue. Many resumed the tasks that had been stopped.
This tendency is now called the Ovsiankina effect. It is far less famous than the Zeigarnik effect, but the 2025 meta-analysis found stronger support for it: people showed a general tendency to resume interrupted tasks.
The distinction matters.
You may not remember every unfinished region of a thousand-piece puzzle more accurately than every section you completed. You may not be able to describe the precise shapes still missing. But when you see the puzzle again, the incomplete pattern offers an obvious next action.

The open task has a direction. It does not need to shout.
Why puzzles make incompleteness visible
Many unfinished obligations are vague. “Sort out the finances” has no visible boundary. “Learn Italian” does not tell you where completion lies. A crowded inbox can grow faster than it shrinks.
A well-made puzzle is different.
Its incompleteness has a shape.
A crossword contains white squares that have not yet become letters. A Sudoku has empty cells and a fixed set of constraints. A jigsaw has a picture with a wound in it. A riddle holds open the distance between question and answer.
Progress is visible too. Each solved clue changes the field for the next. Each placed piece reduces uncertainty. The task may be difficult, but it is usually legible.
This is one reason a puzzle can feel restful even while it asks for effort. It gives attention somewhere definite to go.
The pleasure of completion, explored in A Good Puzzle Should Let You Leave, depends partly on that boundary. There is an ending, and the puzzle allows us to recognise it. But before the ending comes a long middle in which finished and unfinished sit beside each other.
The completed corner says: you have made progress.
The empty centre says: there is still something to discover.
A question held open
Word puzzles make the pull of the unfinished especially clear because language supplies meaning as well as form.
Consider a clue you cannot solve. At first it is only a sentence. Then one interpretation fails, and another becomes possible. A crossing letter appears. A word with seven unknown letters becomes a pattern with three known ones.
You leave the page, but the question has changed. It is no longer any word in the language. It has a beginning, perhaps an ending, and a tone you have started to understand.
Writers know the force of a question held open. A chapter ends before the door is opened. A detective story delays the explanation. A riddle asks us to remain briefly inside uncertainty.
Puzzle designers work with the same tension, but at a smaller and often kinder scale. A clue need not manipulate us into continuing forever. It needs only to make the missing answer feel imaginable.
The earliest computer word games understood this with almost no ornament at all. As The Computer That Asked for a Letter recounts, a hidden word and a row of blank spaces were enough. Every guessed letter transformed absence into structure.
An unfinished pattern began to call for its own completion.
When the call becomes noise
Not every open loop is pleasant.
An unfinished work task can follow us into the weekend. A difficult puzzle can become irritation rather than invitation. A game can manufacture incompleteness endlessly, ensuring that every achievement reveals another meter, reward or obligation.
The psychology of resumption is therefore not automatically benign. Designers can use visible incompletion to help people orient themselves—or to make stopping feel like failure.
The difference is partly one of ownership.
A jigsaw left on your own table waits on your terms. You decide whether the missing sky is a welcome thought or something to cover with a cloth. A considerate digital puzzle preserves your place without punishing your absence. It lets incompleteness remain a possibility, not a debt.
Good quiet play gives the player both things: a reason to return and permission not to.
How to put a puzzle down
There is a practical paradox here. Sometimes the easiest way to stop thinking about something is not to finish it, but to decide how you will continue.
In research published in 2011, E. J. Masicampo and Roy Baumeister found that unfulfilled goals could intrude on unrelated tasks. Making a specific plan for completing the goal reduced those cognitive effects, even though the goal itself remained unfinished.
A plan can act like a bookmark for intention.
Puzzle solvers often invent such bookmarks naturally. They leave a promising piece beside the place it might fit. They circle a clue. They pencil in a candidate. They stop at the end of a row rather than halfway through it.
These gestures do not complete the puzzle. They make the return path visible.
That may be a gentler way to live with an unfinished problem: not forcing closure, and not asking the mind to hold everything, but leaving one clear thread to pick up later.
The quiet promise of later
We tend to celebrate the final piece, the filled grid and the answer that suddenly makes sense. Completion deserves its small ceremony.
But unfinished puzzles have a value of their own.
They create a pocket of future attention. A question remains in the world that we may choose to visit again. Unlike the bottomless feeds and perpetual progress systems surrounding so much modern leisure, a traditional puzzle’s incompleteness is finite. The blank spaces can, eventually, be filled.
Perhaps this is why a puzzle resting on a table feels so different from an alert resting on a phone.
Both are unfinished.
Only one knows how to wait.
