The Computer That Asked for a Letter

Long before Wordle, apps and daily streaks, a small computer invited someone to guess a hidden word.

Long before Wordle, apps and daily streaks, a small computer invited someone to guess a hidden word.

Imagine sitting down to play a word game.

There is no glowing screen. No cheerful animation welcomes you. No music begins to play.

In front of you is a keyboard attached to a machine that looks more like an electric typewriter than a computer. A roll of paper waits above it. Somewhere nearby stands a cabinet filled with switches, wires and blinking lights.

The computer has chosen a word.

On the paper, it types:

_ _ _ _ _ _

You press a letter.

The machine pauses, clatters into life and prints its reply.

You are playing Hangman with a computer—and the year is 1969.

Was this the first computer word game?

Probably not.

Or perhaps it was.

The honest answer is that nobody knows for certain.

Many early computer programs were created by students, engineers and researchers for their own amusement. Some were shared between universities. Others remained on a single roll of punched paper tape, were overwritten or simply disappeared when a machine was replaced.

The history of early computing is therefore filled with uncertain beginnings. We often know the first surviving example, the first published example or the first program someone thought to record. That is not necessarily the same as the first program ever written.

But one particularly charming piece of evidence survives.

In November 1969, the program catalogue of the Digital Equipment Computer Users Society included an entry called The Hangman Game. It was written by Dan Miller of Glastonbury, Connecticut, in the programming language FOCAL ’68.

Its purpose was wonderfully straightforward: it allowed a person to play the familiar word-guessing game against a computer. The complete program could even run in 4K of memory if some extended functions were removed.

No high-resolution display was required. No graphics processor. No internet connection.

Only a hidden word, a few letters and the desire to know what came next.

Before the computer, there was the grid

Computers did not invent our fascination with hidden words.

More than half a century before Dan Miller’s program appeared in a catalogue, newspaper readers were already leaning over one of the most influential word puzzles ever printed.

On 21 December 1913, the New York World published Arthur Wynne’s Fun’s Word-Cross Puzzle. Its diamond-shaped grid contained intersecting answers based on 31 questions. It is generally recognised as the first modern crossword puzzle.

The design was not quite the crossword we know today. The grid had no familiar pattern of black and white squares, and even its name had not settled into its final form. “Word-cross” would soon become “crossword.”

But the essential pleasure was already there.

A clue suggested something just out of reach. One answer revealed part of another. Empty spaces slowly became words, and those words transformed confusion into order.

It was a puzzle built from language, but also from anticipation.

What could that clue mean?

What happens when these two words meet?

Decades later, computers offered a new way to ask the same questions.

A computer becomes the puzzle keeper

Hangman was almost perfectly suited to early computers.

The rules were simple. One player secretly chose a word. The other proposed letters. Correct guesses appeared in their proper positions; incorrect guesses reduced the number of attempts remaining.

A computer did not need to understand the meaning of the word. It only needed to remember it, compare letters and keep count.

That was enough to create the illusion of a watchful opponent.

The machine knew something you did not.

That small imbalance transformed a calculation into a game.

In most computer programs, the machine was expected to produce an answer. In Hangman, the computer already possessed the answer—and persuaded the human to search for it.

That reversal still lies at the heart of many digital puzzles today.

The computer creates a private little world with rules, patterns and concealed information. The player enters that world and tries to understand it.

The community behind the game

The survival of The Hangman Game also tells us something about the earliest communities of computer users.

The Digital Equipment Computer Users Society—better known as DECUS—grew from a meeting of PDP-1 users in 1961. At the time, computer owners often had to write much of their own software. Sharing programs prevented every organisation from having to solve the same problems again from the beginning.

DECUS became a place where programmers could exchange knowledge and user-created software, often distributed on magnetic tape. It eventually grew into one of the world’s largest international computer-user societies.

Its catalogues contained serious scientific and business software, but also games.

Among programs for statistical analysis, loudspeaker measurements and engineering calculations, someone had made room for Hangman.

That detail feels important.

Even when computers were rare, expensive and primarily associated with work, people still wanted to play with them. They wanted to see whether these strange new machines could tell stories, roll dice, play cards or hide a word.

Curiosity entered the computer room almost as soon as the computer did.

A conversation printed on paper

Today, we tend to think of computer games as visual experiences.

Early word games could be something quite different: a conversation between a person and a machine, recorded one line at a time.

The player typed a letter.

The computer answered.

The player studied the result and tried again.

The exchange could appear on a continuous sheet of paper, leaving behind a physical record of every good guess, every mistake and every moment of hesitation.

In that sense, the computer did not immediately replace the paper puzzle.

It changed the paper into something that could reply.

The crossword page had always waited patiently for the solver. Now, for the first time, the puzzle could react.

Quiet by necessity

Early computers were not physically quiet. Their printers, fans and mechanical terminals could make plenty of noise.

But their games were quiet in another sense.

There were no notifications waiting at the edge of the screen. No rewards for returning tomorrow. No advertisements interrupting the next turn. No row of icons competing for attention.

The limitations of the machine left only the game.

A word.

A question.

A decision.

Modern devices are capable of producing experiences that would have seemed impossible in 1969. They can render entire worlds, connect millions of players and place an almost unlimited library of games in a pocket.

Yet greater technical possibility does not always produce a better puzzle.

Sometimes it merely adds more things between the question and the answer.

From Hangman to the games in our pockets

The line from an early Hangman program to today’s word games is not perfectly straight, but the family resemblance is clear.

A word remains hidden.

The player receives incomplete information.

Each action reveals something.

Gradually, uncertainty gives way to recognition.

Modern games can surround that process with colour, sound, statistics, social sharing and daily rituals. Those additions can be delightful. But they are not the source of the satisfaction.

The satisfying moment is still the moment when scattered clues suddenly become a word.

It is the instant before understanding, followed by the instant after.

Computers have changed enormously since the 1960s. Human curiosity has not.

What the earliest word games got right

The most interesting lesson from The Hangman Game is not that an old computer could perform a clever trick.

It is that so little was needed.

The program did not require a cinematic story or a complex reward system. It created tension by withholding a handful of letters. It trusted the player to provide the imagination.

That simplicity is worth remembering.

A thoughtful puzzle does not have to demand your full evening. It does not need to rush you or persuade you to continue long after you intended to stop.

It can simply place a small mystery in front of you and wait.

Perhaps that is why word puzzles move so naturally between paper and computers. Their real machinery exists neither in the printed grid nor inside the device.

It exists in the space between a clue and the person reading it.
